I have recently received a couple of unsolicited books from the publisher.  I don’t really think I’ll ever read them.  Since they deserve a good home, I’ll offer them to my readers on a first come, first served basis.  I am happy to ship them to you freely.  I only have a small request based on your circumstances:

  • If you have your own book blog, please let me know when you’ve reviewed your book.  I’ll link to your review here.
  • If you don’t have your own blog, please write a review and email it to me.  The review doesn’t have to be very long at all.  Just provide your impressions of the book.  I’ll post it here as a guest review.

Here are the books I have to send:

If you would like to read one of these books, please post a comment here (so that others know it’s been taken).  If your comment is the first request for the book, please send me an email that includes your mailing address.  I have to go to the post office tomorrow, so if I get your information before noon EST, it will be in the mail tomorrow.

How Would You Spend a Free $50 Amazon Card?

I attended a focus group meeting at my conference today and earned a $50 Amazon gift card. So, now I get to puzzle my way through how to spend it. One thought is to hold on to it and eventually order a Kindle. Another thought is to buy some more wonderful books. I’m an immediate pleasure type of girl, so I’m leaning toward the books. This then leads to the question: which books should I buy?

I’ve always wanted to read Through a Glass Darkly by Karleen Koen. Amy at Pages from the Past, a new book blog, posted her review of the book today and it is glowing. So, I’ve added that to my cart. Steven King reviewed The Garden of Last Days by Andre Dubus III a couple of weeks ago in Entertainment Weekly and it sounds incredible. I’ve added that to my list. What else?

I had to go to my last session before I finished shopping. While I was there, Flannery O’Conner flashed into my head for no apparent reason. I’ve never read anything she’s written, but I’ve always been intrigued. I also remembered Marie from The Boston Bibliophile recommended the Rashi’s Daughters series and Bluestocking recommended The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe. I wrote those down in my notebook for later. When I got back to my computer, I discovered that the first book in the Rashi’s Daughters series was not in stock, so I couldn’t even consider buying it new. So, I added The Complete Flannery O’Conner and The Mysteries of Udolpho to my cart.

This put my totals over $50 and I wanted to get as close as possible. I had to make a cut (well, I didn’t have to, but I wanted to pay nothing for the books so it was a complete fruit from my focus group labor). I played around with the totals and when I took Through a Glass Darkly out of my cart, my total was $49.27. What could be closer? Since I can easily get that book from the library, I went with that.

To recap, here’s what I bought:

The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe
The Complete Flannery O’Conner
The Garden of Last Days by Andre Dubus III

I know I’m going to kick myself for asking this because you’ll come up with such marvelous things that I will second guess myself, but I am anyway:

What would you do if a $50 Amazon card fell in your lap?

Check out her contest in celebration of her upcoming 100th post. Long time, no posts.  I hope that you all had a wonderful week last week.  I’ve now returned from a much enjoyed trip to the Land of Dolly.  As much as I enjoyed my vacation, it feels good to be in my own home and sitting in my own bed as I type.  We did not have Internet access after Tuesday.  Wow!  That was a long time to be without.  I’ve got a lot of email and blogs to catch up on!

The first part of our vacation was spent with my parents, my four siblings, and their families.  It was so nice to all be together in one place, even though we experienced a good deal of trauma during  those first few days…

  1. The first full day Danny threw his back out at our hotel by walking from the bathroom to the refrigerator.  He was down that entire day and most of next two.
  2. While taking the girls to the pool that same day, I tripped on my really cute but dangerous heals and fell down a few stairs.  I twisted my ankle pretty bad and it still hurts tonight.
  3. The next day, while at the pool once again, Ally, my youngest, slipped through her Dora swimming ring and went under water.  I had left my bathing suit at the hotel, so I dove into the pool fully clothed.  My brother called to me that he had her, but I wasn’t aware of anything else other than my baby underwater waving her arms helplessly.  This all took only a matter of seconds, but it felt like an eternity to me.  She’s fine, but the color from the beach towel I wrapped myself up in afterwards bled onto my new turquoise capris.

After that, things looked up considerably.  We enjoyed the rest of the time with my family and then my best friend Trista and her family from Michigan came down.  We rented a chalet up in the mountains a few minutes from Dollywood.  Trista’s two children fall between mine in age.  Despite the bickering that comes with preschoolers living together, they had a great time.  It’s so nice to be able to watch them play.  Together, we went to the Gatlinburg aquarium, an arcade on the strip, Cooters, Dollywood, miniature golfing, to a petting zoo, and to Dixie Stampede.  Have I mentioned we had a great time?

I even got some reading done along the way.  I’ll post official reviews later this week, but I finished The Lady Elizabeth (well written, but no new territory explored there), Last Night at the Lobster (an excellent novella!), and Trauma (I finished that up a half hour ago while soaking in a hot tub – superb.  One of McGrath’s better novels).

Tomorrow I’ll be drawing for my May Book Give Away after work.  There’s still time if you’d like a chance to get a free book in the mail!

May Book Give Away

It’s May and spring is finally here. I’m in the mood to do some spring cleaning and I thought I might provide my readers with the gift of a new book.

This year I’ve received several Advance Reader’s Copies of books and I’ve reviewed them here at Literate Housewife. Five of them are part of this book give away:

Artist’s Proof

The Forgery of Venus

Gardens of Water

The House at Riverton

The Venetian Mask

I’m also giving away my two used trade paperback copies I own…:

Bel Canto

The Cider House Rules

And two hardcover copies…:

Jonathon’s Story

The Lady and the Unicorn

What do you need to do to get one of the free books?  If you live in the US or Canada, simply leave a comment to my review of the book(s) you are interested in and let me know why you would like to read it.   For each book, I’ll draw a winner at random from all of the comments posted on Tuesday, May 20th.   I’ll let the winner know by email.  If I get the addresses, I’ll have all of the books in the mail that Thursday or Friday.

This is a win/win situation.  My bookshelves will be just that much tidier and you might find yourself with a free book.

Good luck!!!
